PSG prevailed against Bayern Munich 5-4 in what many are calling the game of the year in the UEFA Champions League semi-final on Tuesday. Paris Saint-Germain was led by Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, who scored two goals and an assist, as well as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who also scored two goals. Bayern went down 5-2 early in the second half, but two late goals from Luis Diaz and Dayot Upamecano gave the Germans hope for when they return home for the second leg next Wednesday. This sets up another exciting match next week, as both teams have reasons to push for more goals. PSG showed why they won the UCL last year and dominated the Club World Cup this past summer.
PSG won this game because of their relentless press and aggressive playstyle. They play a classic 4-3-3 formation, but it is constantly moving and changing. Manager Luis Enrique allows his two fullbacks, Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi, to attack and push forward at any time, which helps create numbers in the attack. Dembélé and Kvaratskhelia have excelled in this system. Kvaratskhelia has 14 goal contributions in 14 Champions League games this season, and Dembélé has reached eight. Dembélé said after the match, “With Luis Enrique, you must press always. It’s the only way.”
This strategy often leaves holes in the defense and requires stamina to sustain such pressure for 90 minutes.
This game, however, was on another level, as both teams were constantly pressing and in motion, putting pressure on the opponent. Enrique, who is known for pressing styles like this, even said, “I've never seen a pace like that.” (Romano 2026) We saw this late in the second half. What helped the Germans mount a comeback was just how tired PSG looked, which helped Bayern retake control of the game and earn the two late goals. Both teams were very hungry to score, which was refreshing to see, as not many teams adopt this strategy. However, Bayern and PSG have the personnel for it, and it is what got them this far in the tournament.
These two teams will meet next Wednesday for the return leg, as PSG will go into Germany one goal up. This second leg will be interesting to see how both teams start. The Parisians being up a goal might cause them to play a little more defensively, since if the game ends 0-0 they will move on, but this is not their style. This also doesn't seem to be the mindset PSG has going into it. Dembélé said, “We will not change our philosophy in Munich.” We are going to attack.” This could be smart because it is what has gotten them this far, but it could allow the Germans to have a lot more attacking opportunities in a matchup they feel confident in. Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany says, “We'll give absolutely everything, really everything we have, even if we have to die on the pitch. We believe.”
They have every reason to believe after scoring four goals in a tough place to play against the best team in the world. The separator between these two teams was a controversial penalty decision that went PSG’s way, and without it, it was a really even match.
Now Bayern has the chance to go home with their crowd, only down by a goal against a team they know they can score against, and they have a lot of players in top form who can do it. Michael Olise, who has been Munich’s shining star this season, has 12 goal contributions in 12 UCL games and scored one on Tuesday. Diaz, a recent signing for the Germans, has 7 goals in the UCL this season. The two on the wing, paired with England legend Harry Kane, give this team all the confidence in the world to advance to the UCL final. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich will face off again on Wednesday, May 6th, at Allianz Arena at 3 PM EST.
